Petition Title: Let Android Users Install and Move Apps to TF/SD Cards Again
📄 Petition Summary:
We're asking Google and the Android OS team to restore the ability for users to install and move apps to microSD/TF cards. This feature has been restricted in recent Android versions, leaving millions of users—especially those with budget devices—without enough storage to use their devices effectively. Expandable storage should be a feature we can actually use, not just for photos, but for apps and games too.
📝 Petition Body:
To: Google, the Android OS Team, and Android Device Manufacturers
We, the undersigned, respectfully request the restoration of one of Android’s most practical and user-focused features: the ability to install and move apps to TF/microSD cards.
🚫 What’s the Issue?
In Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), users were introduced to "adoptable storage"—a way to format SD cards as internal memory. But over time, this feature has become limited or entirely disabled on many devices. In recent versions of Android:
Apps are restricted from installing or moving to SD cards due to system-level changes (like scoped storage).
Google Play Store policies discourage developers from allowing external storage installs.
Many OEMs (Samsung, LG, etc.) disable adoptable storage entirely, even when the hardware supports it.
This leaves users—especially those on affordable devices—with no way to expand their usable app storage, even if they have a TF/microSD card slot.
💡 What We’re Asking For:
We urge Google and the Android ecosystem to:
1. Bring back native support for installing and moving apps to SD cards.
2. Encourage (or require) OEMs to re-enable adoptable storage where hardware permits.
3. Update Play Store guidelines to allow and encourage SD card support for large apps and games.
4. Give users the option to enable external storage with appropriate warnings, instead of removing the choice entirely.
🤝 Why It Matters:
It empowers users with more control over their own devices.
It helps people in rural or data-limited areas who rely on offline apps and games.
It makes affordable devices more usable and longer-lasting.
Many users already own high-quality SD cards that can handle apps reliably.
✊ Take Action
If you believe Android should give users back the choice to manage their own storage, please sign this petition.
Let’s tell Google: Expandable storage should mean real expansion—not just for photos, but for the apps we rely on every day.
