At AACPS, high schoolers are banned from decorating themselves at graduation other than with school issued cords, this includes graduation caps. We believe that graduation caps should be allowed to be decorated in an appropriate manner that allows students to enjoy their rite of passage that is waited for 12 years or more in an expressive and personalized way. Students are expected to purchase and keep their own cap and gowns, therefore they should be allowed to personalize a cap that resembles their 12 years of hard work and dedication that led them to the point of graduating. AACPS can ensure that caps are appropriate by putting decoration restrictions such as no obscenity, profanity, violence, or decoration that would be offensive or harmful. Students who don't follow the restrictions can risk not being allowed to walk the stage.
