The right to basic medical health

The Issue

The Lesotho government has taken away the Basotho people’s right to basic medical health and the right to employment by discriminating against those who are not vaccinated against the Covid-19.

These people have been denied access to medical treatment for their chronic diseases since 2021 when the government introduced a vaccine mandate. They are not allowed into government medical facilities for medical treatment. The  vast majority are depended on the state for their HIV, diabetes, anti-hypertension medications to name but a few. Lesotho with a population of only 2 million has the second highest rate of HIV infection rate in the world (25 % according to worldpopulationreview.com). Life expectancy is just 58 years (worldbank.org).
These people borrow the bus fare to get to these facilities only to be turned away for not being vaccinated against a virus that might make them ill for a few days whereas their chronic diseases  without treatment are guaranteed to send them to their graves.

Some of these people are children, others are disabled and others are their 80 year old grannies who are their sole guardians. Some of these children are from households headed by other children. None of them have the privileges enjoyed by the law makers &their families.
People have been dismissed from their jobs for not being vaccinated. Jobs are extremely hard to come by where registered unemployment rate is a staggering 24.7% (take-profit.org) . Unofficial unemployment rates are more likely to be north of 40%: people who have given up looking for employment & those who never registered as job seekers.

There is an abundance of research on the negative impacts of the past 3 years on health, the economy, education, child development, social welfare etc and now there is proof that the vaccine mandate has shaky legs at best. The majority of people being (re-)infected are the people who have been vaccinated ( 98% vaccinated vs 68% unvaccinated of those sampled in the most populous province ,Gauteng South Africa.

Below is a link for this aforementioned research.

Speak for the voiceless, everyone has a right to medical treatment & no one has a right to deny them.
