The mission of Agnes Scott College is to “think deeply, live honorably and engage the intellectual and social challenges of their times”.

Since graduating Agnes Scott College in 1971 as the first Black graduate of the college, Edna Lowe Swift has honored this mission passionately through her masters work in Spain to teaching in the Atlanta School System for nearly thirty years. She has also led future generations, a daughter and a granddaughter, to attend Agnes Scott College where they have thrived and have been successful. Edna Lowe Swift represents Agnes Scott College, and it is time the college honors her much more than publications on social media and print. Currently, Agnes Scott College’s website under the “History” tab does not bare mention of anything having to do with the first Black graduating student.

To remedy this situation, this is the following proposal:

  1. Rename Dana Fine Arts Building to Edna Lowe Swift ‘71 Arts Building.
  2. Stronger emphasis on the Education minor/program on campus.
  3. Create a scholarship/grant in her honor for those majoring/minoring in Spanish and/or Education
  4. Provide accessibility for students who need ASL (American Sign Language) services
