Today I have heard that the Roman Way Community Centre, previously called the day centre is closing in my home town. I live in a white middle class market town in Leicestershire.

In 1986 I did a part time voluntary job at this centre supporting people with learning difficulties, autism and physical impairments to write a newspaper. I loved the role and thirty years later some of the people still speak to me when I’m out and about. I don’t know any details about the closure but rumours have it that it’s being sold for private housing possibly another group of flats for wealthy people.

Closure of this facility will have grave implications for many of these people as well as their parents. Please don’t get me wrong I’m not a fan of day centres but often the alternatives are worse!
