Why this petition matters

Started by Tonya Haustveit

Please help support our petition in keeping Driver's Education mandatory in the state of Idaho. House Bill 320 is proposing that Driver's Education be "optional." The Bill would allow a 14 year old student to apply for a learners permit by taking a written knowledge test. Once they pass the written test, they can legally drive and be taught by their parents how to drive. The student will have to continue driving with their parents until they reach the age of 16. They will drive with the parent for 2 years before they can ever apply for a license. After they reach the age of 16, they can then apply for their license by taking a skills test or driving test with a certified skills tester. If they pass the skills test, they can then become a licensed driver.

How many of us feel comfortable and safe teaching our youth to drive on Eagle or Meridian road without a brake in our car? How many parents know how to calmly and safely teach their child to change lanes, enter and exit the freeway, parallel park? The list of what Driver's Education and the driving instructors teach our kids goes on and on.

Would you feel safe placing your child on the road with others who have not been formally taught to drive? Idaho is not all rural anymore. We have become one of the fastest growing states in the US. How can we make sure that our youth are taught safely and properly to drive, if Driver's Education is no longer required? Please sign our petition to let the legislatures know we want our roads to be safe by mandating youth to take Driver's Education.
