Protecting the Limerick Area and the Crowe Valley Watershed Conservation Area from Mining

WHEREAS private proponents are currently proposing to advance a low-grade, potentially acid generating, nickel-cobalt-copper mining project in the Township of Limerick (Hastings County), in the headwaters of the Crowe Valley Conservation Watershed Area;
WHEREAS this project has no proven economic viability and threatens to irreparably alter or destroy this sensitive area, home to numerous wetlands, lakes and rivers, and providing essential habitat to many species of fish, mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, including several threatened and endangered species;
WHEREAS this area also provides drinking water, as well as recreational and tourism opportunities, to thousands of Ontarians each year;
WHEREAS the project is facing strong opposition by local and regional community members, including First Nation members;
WE, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows:
That the Ontario Government, the Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, and the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, take immediate and joint actions to deny, suspend or revoke any mining permit in this area, and instead, work with local and regional authorities to preserve and strengthen its biodiversity, as well as its recreational and tourism economic base.
