In Illinois, it’s illegal to own a domesticated skunk (even with a permit). Skunks are classified as protected fur-bearers, despite the fact that other animals like raccoons and foxes can be owned with proper licensing and care. But why in the world would someone want a pet skunk? 

Domesticated skunks are not wild animals. They are bred in captivity, de-scented (meaning no, you will not get sprayed), often vaccinated, and are known for being affectionate, intelligent, and trainable pets. States like Indiana, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, and more allow skunk ownership under clear regulations. And it works! Many people have skunks as pets- and they’re wonderful! I encourage anyone who has never seen a domesticated skunk to go on social media and look them up to see videos and posts from skunk owners to see what their experience is like. The community is much larger than you’d think! 

We are calling on Illinois lawmakers to recognize the difference between wild and domesticated skunks and to allow for legal ownership under a regulated permit system. Currently, I am working on a proposal document that outlines permit regulations, skunk care/needs, behaviors of domesticated skunks, and addressing concerns. 

With the proper laws in place, Illinois can safely and responsibly give skunk-lovers the opportunity we have been waiting for.
