The Issue

As a concerned horse owner, I'm deeply troubled by the limited choices currently allowed in selecting the right professional for equine dentistry. My experiences have repeatedly underscored the need for specialized professionals, not just veterinarians, to conduct equine dentistry. This is due to the fact that equine dentists invest years to specialize in this field while most veterinarians manage with just a few hours of relevant training during their broad education.

Numerous states already permit equine dentistry to be conducted by professionals without veterinary licenses. This is testament to the recognition that specific knowledge and skill set are required for appropriate dental care for horses. Unfortunately, this is not universal and strict legislation continues to limit our choices to primarily veterinarians.

While veterinarians are essential healthcare providers for our animals, they may not always be the most qualified or adept at equine dentistry. This is by no means a discredit to their profession, but rather a call for acknowledging that equine dentistry is a specialized skill beyond general veterinary training.

Therefore, this petition seeks an adjustment in legislation that allows us, the horse owners, the freedom to choose our preferred professional - a veterinarian or an equine dentist, for our equine companions. This move will promote the best interests of the horses and their wellbeing.

We request your support by signing this petition for improved equine dental care.

Thank you to everyone who has signed the petition and reached out to let me know about their support of this issue. As someone who cares deeply about horses and the animals in our lives, I know how important it is to have access to services like equine dentistry. I am currently reviewing the issue, including research that shows how other states do allow for non-veterinary equine dentistry professionals. As with any legislation, I want to ensure there are no unforeseen consequences in how the law is written. Thank you and I look forward to continuing this conversation with my constituents.
