Legalize tobacco purchases for adults aged 18 and over
The Issue
As an 18-year-old in the United States, I've found myself caught in a paradox of adulthood. I've earned the right to vote, a cornerstone of our democracy that empowers me to voice my choices for the future of this nation. I'm also eligible to serve in the military, a commitment that involves risking my life to uphold the liberties and security of our country. These are profound responsibilities bestowed upon adults, yet I'm ironically denied other aspects of adulthood such as the choice to purchase tobacco products.
In 2019, the federal government raised the minimum legal age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21. While this move was intended to deter youth smoking and promote public health, it inadvertently penalizes young adults like myself who bear the responsibilities of adulthood without enjoying all its freedoms. Statistical data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show a decline in youth tobacco use, indicating the effectiveness of educational initiatives rather than age restrictions alone.
Denying 18-to-20-year-olds the right to purchase tobacco products while allowing them to make life-altering decisions such as voting and enlisting in the military is incongruent. It sends a conflicting message about our role and status as adults. At its core, adulthood is about making informed decisions, even those concerning personal health and lifestyle choices.
We propose amending federal legislation to permit individuals aged 18 and over the right to purchase tobacco products legally. This change will align with the existing rights afforded to young adults, recognizing them as full members of society, capable of making their own informed decisions. Furthermore, implementing robust educational campaigns on tobacco's health risks could address the public health concerns without infringing on adult freedoms.
By signing this petition, you advocate for a more consistent and fair approach to adult privileges and responsibilities. Join us in urging lawmakers to reconsider this law, ensuring that young adults are recognized as the responsible citizens they are, capable of making choices about their own lives. Please support this cause and sign the petition.
