Legalize the Use of Medical and Recreational Marijuana for City Employees

Legalize the Use of Medical and Recreational Marijuana for City Employees
The Issue
At present, despite the legal status of recreational marijuana in many states, city employees are still prohibited from using it. This unequal treatment has significant implications for those workers. In countries and states where marijuana is legal, like Canada, New Mexico, and the state of Colorado, studies have shown that the detrimental effects of moderate marijuana usage are rare, while positive medical and psychological benefits are widely reported (Reference: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2017).
Our city should not uphold antiquated, fear-mongering viewpoints around marijuana usage. By continuing to enforce the prohibition, we are directly affecting the quality of life and freedom of choice of our city employees. It’s time we adopt a progressive stance that acknowledges the rights of all employees, regardless of their job description.
Recently, Bernalillo County commissioners voted to remove cannabis (when used off- duty for medical or recreational use) from the definition of illegal drugs in their employee drug and alcohol policy. Employees will still get drug tested but not for marijuana. It’s time we do the same!
We call upon the City Council and County Commissioners of Alamogordo to amend its policy and legally allow all city employees to use medical and/or recreational marijuana, in line with state laws. Every signature on this petition pushes us closer towards an equitable workforce. Sign today and let your voice be part of the change.
