As a poker player, I have seen the joy and excitement that this game can bring, as well as the challenges of not being able to play it within the legal frameworks of our state. We need to follow the example set by the Eight states offer regulated online poker in America: Connecticut, Delaware, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Michigan and including our own neighbor, Rhode Island, that have recognized the benefits of legalizing online poker. While player demand grows nationwide, legal access remains limited to these jurisdictions. 

Legalizing online poker in Massachusetts is not just a matter of following a trend; it’s about providing our residents with safe, regulated platforms to enjoy a game they love. In states that have legalized it, hundreds of thousands of people are playing on reputable sites that offer both security and community. We deserve the same opportunities here in Massachusetts.

Consider this: New Jersey, one of the states where online poker is legal, reported an increase of $122.6 million in annual gaming revenue. That’s money that can be reinvested into education, infrastructure, and other vital public resources right here in Massachusetts. By regulating online poker, we can ensure that this potential revenue stays within our state rather than going to illegal or offshore platforms that do not pay taxes.

Moreover, legalizing online poker would strike a blow against illegal gaming operations, bringing transparency and consumer protections that the current underground system lacks. Residents should have access to fair gaming opportunities, with measures to prevent fraud and ensure responsible gaming practices.
