I’m updating everyone today on the new information that has come to light. According to Illinois state law 10 ILCS 5/28 the petition to be submitted to the county elections board must be handwritten signatures. I know this is disappointing, however, that doesn’t mean the fight is over. There are a few different ways to get LSVs legal this year.
- City council follows up with the resolution that was passed in 2010 and passes the ordinance making them legal.
- City Council places the LSV question on the November ballot (similar to the home rule question that was on the last ballot). The deadline is August 5th.
- We get 227 handwritten signatures of 227 registered voters that include address and other specific information before August 5th.
- We start collecting signatures for next years ballot measure and get it to voters in 2025.
I know this is not what everyone wants to hear but it’s the truth. Unfortunately, I am not a full time activist (nor do I want to be) and my work and family life does not allow me to spend multiple days going around collecting signatures (hence the suggestion of turning in signatures next year to get it done).
If the citizens want this passed this year, the city council will have to do it. If not, we have to try next year. This issue is not dead, just delayed. My recommendation is to call your Aldermen and the mayor asking them to pass the ordinance. I am planning on giving a presentation to city council at a later date and will let everyone know when that will be. I will bring this petition and lots of other pertinent information with me to try to convince the city to pass the ordinance.
