Legalize Low-Speed Vehicles on Columbia, Illinois City Streets

Legalize Low-Speed Vehicles on Columbia, Illinois City Streets
The Issue
As a resident of Columbia, IL, I have seen firsthand how the escalating gas prices are affecting our community. The financial burden is immense and it's time we explore alternative means of transportation. I propose that our city government pass an ordinance allowing low-speed vehicles (LSVs) on city streets that comply with Illinois state law (625 ILCS 5/Illinois Vehicle Code).
These LSVs will not be allowed to cross or travel on major highways such as Illinois Route 3 or Route 158. This restriction ensures safety while promoting local travel and commerce. By keeping our travels within the city limits, we can support local businesses and generate tax revenue for both the city and county.
Additionally, this proposal includes a cap on city registration and ordinance fees at $100 per year per vehicle - making this an affordable solution for many residents struggling with high fuel costs.
But beyond practicality and economics, there's another important factor to consider - joy! Operating an LSV isn't just about getting from point A to B; it's about enjoying the journey. Every person I know who operates an LSV does so with a smile on their face.
Let us embrace these alternative vehicles not only as a solution to rising gas prices but also as a way to bring fun back into our daily commutes. Sign this petition today if you believe in affordable transportation alternatives that support local economy while bringing joy back into our lives!
