The Issue

Kei vehicles are a class of lightweight trucks, vans, and cars originally built for the Japanese domestic market. They prized for their fuel efficiency, low operating cost, compact footprint, and standard four-wheel drive. When at least 25 years old, they are fully legal to import into the United States under federal law, exempt from FMVSS compliance by the same U.S. Customs and Border Protection rule that admits any other classic import.

Despite this lawful federal import status, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles will not register or title any kei-class vehicle. That shuts down farmers, tradespeople, small businesses, and city delivery operators from a low-cost built for city streets and tight budgets.

Texas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Vermont, Alaska, Colorado, and other states have already fixed this. New York can too.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a smarter, cleaner, and more efficient transportation option for New York. Let's urge our lawmakers to revise the registration codes to officially allow kei vehicles on the roads of our state. Your signature can make a difference in shaping a sustainable future for New York's transportation. Please sign this petition to support this crucial change.
