The Issue

I have watched my mom, a vibrant woman full of life, slowly fade away into someone I barely recognize. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, one of the most relentless and devastating diseases, causing unimaginable physical and emotional pain. Seeing her in this condition breaks my heart every day. My family and I are forced to witness her struggle, her dignified spirit trapped in a body that is betraying her. It feels like she is being robbed of herself, piece by piece.

In cases like my mom's, where there is no hope for recovery, why should we deny a person the right to choose how and when they leave this world? If they are of sound mind and body, they should have the autonomy to decide to end their life on their own terms, rather than being condemned to suffer prolonged misery. This is not about encouraging death—it’s about allowing dignity in life, especially when life is defined by terminal illness.

The heart-wrenching reality faced by my mom isn't unique. Countless families around the world face similar agony as they watch their loved ones endure the harrowing journey of terminal diseases. In the United States alone, over 6 million people suffer from Alzheimer's, with numbers projected to nearly triple by 2060 according to the Alzheimer's Association. Each of these individuals deserves the right to choose a peaceful exit instead of a prolonged period of suffering.

Legalizing the right for terminally ill patients to make this decision would empower individuals and families, provide them with peace of mind, and alleviate unnecessary pain. The process should be regulated, involving medical consultations and periodical assessments to ensure that the decisions made are well-informed and voluntary.

Countries like the Netherlands, Belgium, and Canada have successfully allowed assisted dying under strict conditions, setting an example for humane and compassionate legislation. It is time for other nations to consider these models and give people the freedom to decide their end-of-life choices.

This petition calls on lawmakers to legalize the right for those diagnosed with terminal illnesses to choose to end their suffering on their own terms. By implementing clear safeguards and a rigorous decision-making process, we can ensure that this choice is protected and respected.

Please sign this petition to urge our leaders to consider and enact legislation that respects an individual's right to autonomy at the end of their life, allowing them to die with dignity rather than in despair. Together, we can advocate for a compassionate path forward for those facing the harsh realities of terminal illness. Let’s give them the choice they deserve.
