Legalize Class I Pedal-Assist Electric Bicycles in New York State

This petition had 951 supporters

Electric bicycles are not a menace!

Electric bicycles (E-bikes) are similar to traditional manual bicycles except that they include a small electric motor that provides gentle assistance while the rider is pedaling and allows the rider to climb hills, accelerate, and overcome wind resistance more easily. Class I E-bikes conform with federal guidelines requiring the electric motor to shut off once the bike reaches 20 miles per hour.

Why should we legalize Class I E-bikes?
... they allow expanded access to riding a bicycle regardless of age, physical challenge, or cargo load

... they provide a source of transportation for people who either choose not to drive a car or cannot afford a car - or for anyone who wants to arrive to work fresher (less sweaty)

... they reduce traffic congestion and creates zero emissions, making E-bikes a green, environmentally sustainable mode of transportation

... they provide at least 75% of the health and fitness benefits of a traditional manual bicycle!

Sign our petition to ask Assemblyman David Gantt, Chairman of the Assembly Transportation Committee, and Senators Martin Dilan and Thomas O'Mara to support a bill in the upcoming legislative session to legalize Class I pedal-assist electric bicycles as another category of bicycles defined in the New York State Vehicle & Traffic Law.
