Legalize Owning Chickens in Brownstown, Michigan
Legalize Owning Chickens in Brownstown, Michigan
The Issue
Are you sick of paying the high cost of eggs at the grocery store? Would you like the ability to legally raise your own chickens for eggs or even just the ability to have one as a pet?
Unfortunately, if you live in Brownstown Township, Michigan this isn’t LEGALLY possible for you. As a resident of the great city of Brownstown Township, you should be able to legally own up to five or six hens without roosters. (Roosters can be annoying, especially first thing in the morning) but the Hens are very quiet and keep to themselves.
Owning your own chickens can be a very rewarding experience that I think everyone should be able to enjoy. Imagine being able to walk out your backyard door in the morning and grab yourself some fresh eggs. Not only is that one of the perks, but they also act as excellent pest control as they wander the yard and gobble up grasshoppers, snails, and other critters that would harm your garden. Mosquitoes and even TICKS, by making your backyard a little more comfortable in the summer.
Chickens will help control the weeds in and around your garden as well. Chickens are fun to have as pets as well. They are social and friendly animals that are small and easily cared for. They are a great source of fresh eggs and comfort for backyard hobbyists. They can also be a source of diversion and comfort for many human beings. Many cities allow for up to six hens in the backyard setting. HENS ONLY.
But currently Brownstown Township has an ordinance number 141 article 11 section 11:02 which discusses farms, farming, and boarding of horses with reference to "other domestic animals". Building and ordinance department are using this ordinance as rationale for not allowing residents to have pet hens.
The the purpose of this petition is to help the families of Brownstown that are struggling to put food on the table, because who wants to pay over $7 for a dozen eggs. when you can simply walk out your door and grab some fresh eggs out of the chicken coop. I think we should have the right to choose to own chickens, just like other surrounding cities.
