We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the City of Bettendorf amend its municipal code to allow residents to keep backyard chickens within city limits.

Why This Matters:

Backyard chickens provide numerous benefits to individuals, families, and the community, including:

• Fresh, Healthy Eggs: Home-raised eggs are often healthier and more sustainable than store-bought alternatives.

• Educational Opportunities: Raising chickens teaches responsibility and sustainability, making it a great learning experience for children and families.

• Pest Control & Waste Reduction: Chickens help control insects and reduce food waste by consuming kitchen scraps.

• Environmental Benefits: Chickens contribute to sustainable living by producing natural fertilizer and reducing dependence on factory-farmed eggs.

 

Proposed Regulations:

To ensure backyard chickens are managed responsibly, we propose reasonable regulations, such as:

• A limit on the number of hens (e.g., 4-6 per household, no roosters).

• Proper enclosures to prevent noise, odor, and predator issues.

• Compliance with health and safety standards.

 

Many neighboring cities, including Davenport, Rock Island and Moline, have successfully implemented backyard chicken programs. We believe Bettendorf residents should have the same opportunity to promote sustainability and self-sufficiency.
