Legalise pepper spray for self-defence in the UK
The Issue
In 2022, I was kidnapped by someone I believed I knew and could trust. As I struggled to escape him, a brave young woman tried to help me. He smacked her punched her and did it again and then her phone was destroyed when she attempted to call for help. This happened on a main road, not one passerby intervened to help us, I honestly believe that if I had something as simple as pepper spray to defend myself, we could have escaped into the safety of a nearby pub and got help immediately. Instead, he forcefully took my phone and shoved me into his car, leaving me helpless.
This is not an isolated experience. Across the United Kingdom, countless young women and girls live in constant fear of assault and violence. Pepper spray, a non-lethal means of self-protection widely legalised in various countries, remains classified as a prohibited weapon under UK law.
Statistics by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal that in the year ending March 2020, an estimated 618,000 women experienced domestic abuse in England and Wales alone. The figures for assaults in public are distressingly similar. We urgently need to do something , particularly for women, with means to protect themselves in situations where immediate help isn't forthcoming. Legalising pepper spray for self-defence can act as a crucial tool in empowering individuals to protect themselves and escape potentially life-threatening situations.
Yes, there are concerns about the misuse of pepper spray, but these can be mitigated through stringent regulations on its purchase and use, similar to licencing requirements for firearms or controlled substances. Training programs can also be implemented to ensure that those who carry it are aware of the responsible and lawful manner in which it should be used.
Every person has the right to feel safe in their environment. It's time to legalise the use of pepper spray in the UK as a form of self defence especially for those at the greatest risk of violence. This change could save lives and deter attackers by giving potential victims the means to protect themselves.
Help us make this a reality. Sign this petition and urge lawmakers to reconsider the legal status of pepper spray in the UK for the safety and protection of all its citizens. Woman should not have to live in fear with their keys between their fingers we’ve had enough!
