Legalise Pepper Spray and Other Self-Defence Tools in the UK

The Issue

I'm writing this as a person deeply distressed by the rising rate of violent crime in the UK and the limited options for self-defence. My frustration echoes through every terrifying story of someone sexually assaulted or killed here in the UK. One may argue that personal alarms are effective, but they merely serve as a deterrent. Unfortunately, nothing guarantees that the harassment won't escalate into physical harm or even murder.

We need practical, effective, non-lethal options for self-defence. One of such measures is the legalisation of pepper spray and other self-defence tools. Most of these are currently illegal under the Offensive Weapons Act of 1996, leaving citizens with few defense options during dangerous encounters.

In stark comparison, in countries like the United States, where pepper spray is accessible, the National Institute of Justice reported that it has been effective in deterring attacks 90% of the time. If we could achieve even a fraction of this effectiveness, countless lives could be spared from the horror of violence.

This petition seeks to call upon the Home Office to consider amending the Offensive Weapons Act. We urge legalising self-defence items like pepper spray under controlled, accountable parameters. This is not about promoting violence, but about equipping UK citizens with the tools to protect themselves when the need arises.

Now's the time to insist on our safety. Sign this petition and support the cause to legalise pepper spray and other non-lethal self-defence tools in the UK!
