Legalise and Decriminalise Drugs for Safer Access and Reduced Crime in the UK

Legalise and Decriminalise Drugs for Safer Access and Reduced Crime in the UK
The Issue
Each day, countless lives are lost to drug addiction. Special emphasis goes to young individuals, who are falling victim to impure substances due to unsafe, illegal access. Our communities are being destroyed, not only by the devastating effects of addiction but by the wrongful imprisonment of people just for possession. It's time to change the system and policies around drugs in the UK.
By legalising and decriminalising drugs, we provide safer access to substances, reducing the risk of using contaminated drugs. This approach could potentially save thousands of lives annually. Furthermore, fewer people would face unjust imprisonment for drug possession, unclogging our courts and prisons.
The UK has drug misuse death rates more than double the European average, with 63.5 deaths per million people recorded in 2019 (European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, 2020). Implementing legalisation and decriminalisation measures would reduce these figures by ensuring safer drug use and pushing for addiction treatment rather than punishment.
In countries which have implemented drug decriminalisation, such as Portugal, drug-related deaths and HIV infection rates have dramatically decreased (EMCDDA report, 2018). It is high time the UK followed suit.
This is not simply a public health issue, but a matter of social justice and human rights. Sign this petition and make a difference - let's push for the legalisation and decriminalisation of drugs to protect our community members and break the cycle of drug-related crime in the UK.
