Labour-led Leeds City Council is sacrificing precious Green Belt to double the size of Thorpe Park in Leeds.

In spite of a 2020 court judgement, ruling councillors are determined to develop one green belt site on Barrowby Lane (site EG2-37 in Proposed Main Modification MM39, www.leeds.gov.uk/planning/planning-policy/adopted-local-plan/site-allocations-plan/inspector’s-proposed-main-modifications), east of Thorpe Park and The Springs retail park.

The High Court ruled all of the 37 green belt sites that the council had previously included in their city-wide Site Allocations Plan (SAP) should be removed, each allocated for new housing or business developments in the next decade.

Instead, they agreed to modify the plan but refused to concede on this LS15 site.

If approved, East Leeds’ dwindling green belt will be further eroded and this large section lost forever.

Brownfield land should be prioritised for development and this site's development could be used to justify future expansion into East Leeds' greenspace.

The High Court ruling must be respected: Barrowby Lane (MX2-38 now EG2-37) should be deleted and not allocated again. The site should remain in the green belt.
