Protect the Lives of Youth namely Young Athletes

We lost Hicham at the age of 15 years to sudden cardiac arrest on May 1, 2010 while he was practicing football with his school team. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the number one killer in young athletes (aged 12 to 35 years). It is 2.5 times more common in athletes as compared to non-athletes. Undetected heart conditions are the most common cause of SCA in this age group.Yet, the majority of these heart conditions can be detected early and can be treated. SCA can happen anytime, anywhere and at any age.

Hicham was found to have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. A cardiac screening and prompt use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and an automated external defibrillator (AED) could have saved him! Cardiac screening is simple, painless and fast; it includes medical history, a physical exam and an electrocardiogram (EKG). Around one in 300 young athletes screened have a heart disorder that increases their risk of SCA.

Lebanon lost several young lives to SCA! In the last two weeks of February 2019, at least six young lives were lost to SCA as reported in media! The number could be higher! Why wait till we lose another young life?

This is an appeal from Champs Fund to the Lebanese Government to protect the lives of youth namely young athletes. Let us all call for:

1. Mandatory cardiac screening of young athletes.
2. Mandatory CPR training integrated in schools and universities. All coaches should be trained on CPR as well.
3. Mandatory AEDs in public places with high risk of sudden cardiac arrest namely sports, educational & commercial places.

Loosing a healthy young child suddenly is so devastating and painful!

Please support our appeal by signing it! Please share it and spread the word! The more signatures we have, the more our voice is heard!

Let us together protect the lives of our youth ! Let us together protect the lives of our  young athletes!Let us make a change in the lives of our young athletes, their families, their friends, their team members and their communities!

Thank you!
