Haringey Council: Give All Residents a Vote on all Major Development Proposals

Haringey Council: Give All Residents a Vote on all Major Development Proposals

The Issue

London Progressives are calling on Haringey Council to give all residents living in the area concerned a vote on all current and future Major Development Proposals which the Council wishes to authorise / deliver on. This applies to both Large Scale Major Developments and Small Scale Major Developments.

Haringey is a diverse, vibrant borough which includes areas such as Tottenham, Muswell Hill, Harringay, Wood Green, Highgate etc. where numerous "regeneration projects" (as described by the council are taking place), and a large number of residents across all parts of the borough have openly expressed strong opposition to these projects. However, the council are still going ahead with these.

There are various significantly controversial Major Development Proposals and Major Developments taking place across Haringey, such as:

  • Hornsey Town Hall: which is becoming a Hotel in spite of strong opposition from residents.
  • Housing Demolitions across Haringey: where thousands of Homes would be demolished to make way for Expensive Housing, and there are concerns that the council would not be able to reach the "affordable housing" target set by the council themselves. This would result in many people not being able to afford to live in Haringey.
  • Apex House: where a 22 Storey Block of more Expensive Housing is replacing customer services in spite of strong opposition from residents.

These are just some of many. A significant proportion of the community are against plans such as these, and concerns raised from the "consultations" taken place have often been ignored by the Council.

Haringey Council often claim that the projects and proposals which they are authorising and delivering are in the best interests of residents. In order to determine this, it is fundamental that all residents are democratically given a secret ballot vote on all current and future Major Development Proposals (which have been authorised by the council) in the Borough so they can decide what is in their best interests (not developers who have no interest in Haringey apart from making a profit, and are currently the people having the biggest say on this).

We acknowledge that some of the Proposals might well be in the best interests of residents. However, only if a majority of residents vote in favour of Major Development Proposals taking place in the area they live in, should these projects take place.

Please sign this petition to Haringey Council to ensure that all residents living in the area where the Council intend to authorise / deliver Major Development Proposals are given the opportunity to vote on all current and future Major Development Proposals to decide whether these projects take place.
