Bring "Manos" to Middletown
Bring "Manos" to Middletown
The Issue
In 1966, an insurance salesman from El Paso, Texas named Harold P. Warren made a bet with Stirling Silliphant, the famous screenwriter (of Route 66) that "Anyone can make a movie, even me". Thus the now infamous Manos: The Hands of Fate was born, featuring a cast and crew of locals, the film focused on a vacationing family who get lost and wind up at a house of horrors, a cult of madness led by The Master (Tom Neyman) and Torgo (John Reynolds), chaos ensues as the family attempts to escape.
The film was an instant flop at it's premiere at the Capri theatre and fell into relative obscurity later on, the film's star, Jackey Neyman, attempted to find a copy of the film but her efforts came up short. It was not until the early 1990's when the comedy program Mystery Science Theatre 3000 featured it on their January 30, 1993 broadcast that the film gained notoriety.
For years, the only way one could have seen the film is through a rather muddy public domain print distributed on DVD by Alpha Video, that was several generations removed from it's source material. Then, one day in 2011, a gentleman named Ben Solovey found two original prints of the film (a theatrical print and a workprint) and restored it from the ground up. Here is Mr. Solovey's website on his restoration: Manos In HD
This is where this petition comes into play, I am Geno Cuddy, a lover of all types of films, be they classics like Casablanca or be they schlocky low budget films from the grindhouses like Manos. I have wanted to see the newly completed restoration since it was first made public, there have been showings of the restoration across the country, which I sadly have not been able to make.
This is why I want to bring the film, and possibly two of the only known surviving parties associated with the film to Wesleyan University in my town of Middletown, CT. I think it would not only bring attention to the film but Wesleyan's grand film studies program. However I need assistance to make this dream a reality, all you need to do is take 30 seconds out of your day to sign this petition.
Thank you for supporting not only me, but the film and the people who made it possible. LETS PUT TORGO ON THE BIG SCREEN IN CONNECTICUT!!!!!
