Save our Youth Clubs

We are a group of young people from across Tower Hamlets who have initiated this campaign following a final decision made by the  Tower Hamlets Council for a reduced number of youth centre venues which will result in closure of 18 youth centres of the 26 youth provisions across the borough-This is almost a 75% cut to our service.

The closure of youth provisions will come into operation a week before the summer holidays starts (14/07/2016). These are clear evidence suggesting that council do not care about young people. Our view is based on the fact that the council have made a decision to close youth provisions at a time when it’s most needed and utilised by young people.

We feel that our trust in the council has been breached and we want to convey the message that the decision they made about closing the youth centre will affect the  young people the most  as youth clubs provides a safe venue for our friends to meet, take part in activities and teach us important  life skills.

Moreover, it provides a platform for us to be good citizens and helps us to make positive contributions to our communities. It supports young  people having difficulties with finding employment and personal issues such as bullying and problems young people might be facing at home or in the community.

We also want to make it clear that we will not travel across other areas to attend the one youth club in our lap which is being planned and agreed by the Council. It is not a safe option given the rise in violence and post code gangs. It is not a realistic approach to youth provisions in Tower Hamlets.  This approach will lead young people to even more anti-social behaviour and increase in street violence and crime. We therefore believe that  the Council are storing up social problems for the future which will cost more to fix in the long term as the closure of youth provisions by almost 75% will make this worse.

As well as voicing our concerns we have started  this youth clubs petition.  We will fight for our youth club until they leave our clubs alone. We want you to be part of our campaign and support this undeserved decision made by the Council. You can support our campaign by writing to the mayor instructing him to keep his hands off our youth service, by tweeting, messaging on facebook and attending our forth coming events where you will be given the opportunity to be part of our campaign.

Our campaign started  a few days ago and we already have support of over 1500 people, in addition to support from our parents and concerned residents and community leaders. Our campaign is fast growing and has gained huge support from all communities.

Its our young people - our Kids- One Voice Lets make it heard!- Its time for Tower Hamlets to Listen.
