The guidelines and point system that goes into sentencing a convicted child abuser or not morally correct or fare to the victim or their family.  Sentencing on the severity of the crime should be more important that wether it was the first offense or only offense.  Also if another crime is committed during bond time, the two should not be lumped together.   That is showing that the guilty person has no sense of right from wrong and needs to be held accountable.  My grandsons father severely physically abused him when he was only four months old and doctors statements lead to the evidence that he hurt him more than once. When my daughter and I found out he was injured he had 28 broken/fractured ribs, new and in the healing stages, and a broken tibia in his leg.  He waited over six months to tell the truth and confess, later recanting on advice from his family and lawyer and tried to falsely setup a case against my daughter.  Prosecutors saw through it with witness testimony and charged him with first degree child abuse, while he was out on bail he committed felony embezzlement from his place of work and was arrested and fired.  It took four years with his lawyer creating reasons to prolong the trial and then Covid hit.  Through this whole thing he never once spoke not on the stand or to the judge while being sentenced, not even a sorry just no I have nothing to say.  Now here is the shocker, do to what we believe to be family influence in our county or even state, he was only sentenced to 10-12 months in the county jail, for both things together.   That is barely one week per broken bone, comment was made at a later date the judge was worried he would get roughed up in prison so did the max for county jail.   No convicted child abuser who broke so many bones in a precious sweet little baby should get the minimum sentence for any reason, there has to be some kind of mandatory sentencing for broken bones, and any other life altering, severe pain induced injuries.  I need help in making the system right for the next sweet precious child who undergoes such horrific abuse.  And for statistics sake it is extremely hard to break a infant bones because they are very flexible for birthing purposes.  And not that it matters but this man had tons of support and was not alone in the day to day or evening care of this sweet baby boy. I want to change the laws on how these convicted people are sentenced and also there needs to be more support for the victims and their families.   Having a point system that says, oh you deserve less time because it’s your first offense is not okay when a baby is tortured.  Also this was his first and his only child and was never left alone with any other children, so the fact that this was his first chance to do harm and the ridiculous notion he should be rewarded for this is crazy and why so many children are subject to such extreme abuse in our country.  Please help my grandson and his mother get some justice by helping all the future children in danger.  Oh he was convicted of 2nd degree not first, which holds up to a 10 year prison term, so if he only got 12 months in county jail for 29 broken bones in a baby, what does a person have to do to get the 10 years or even half of 5 years???  Michigan and all state legislators need to make a change, step up and protect our children and their futures.   If these laws are changed, I believe with more severe and clear punishment, someone who only can possibly care about themselves to do such harm to a baby or child, will think twice before they resort to violence to get their way.  Statistics show in other countries having clear and strict laws on child abuse does help and this is what we as a nation need to do, it is NOT okay to severely injure a child in anyway for any reason.  And you need to be held accountable for your actions!
