Urge lawmakers to implement a carbon tax
Urge lawmakers to implement a carbon tax
The Issue
Too much CO2 is a widespread air pollution problem that originated from human development. This has released significant amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. This increase in CO2 contributes to the greenhouse effect, where the higher amounts of CO2 absorb more heat from the sun, preventing more sunlight from being reflected back into the atmosphere. This leads to global warming and climate change, where overall temperatures will increase and future weather patterns will alter. This issue affects the entire world and everyone on it, as global warming/climate change are not area specific problems. Under the EPA’s proposed Clean Power Plan, states will be responsible for cutting power plants’ carbon pollution 30% from 2005 levels by 2030. However, it remains unclear which, if any, of these direct and indirect strategies, actually mitigate plants’ emissions because scholars have yet to test their effects using plant-level emission data. The extinction of species is currently occurring at an alarming rate. There has also been a rise in lung-related disorders, such as asthma. All of these occurrences have led to political discourse on this issue has been growing over the last few years. We could solve this by taking small steps and help to reduce our CO2 emissions which would set a precedent for followers to follow in our footsteps. Meanwhile, we will continue to take donations that will help fund the development of CO2 removal from the atmosphere, similar to the startups that Marc Gunther referred to.
