Tougher laws in India to prevent cruelty against Animals

The Issue

Mahatma Gandhi once rightly said, “The greatness of a nation is judged by the way it treats its animals.”

But in today’s times, animals are target to cruelty and worst is that perpetrators of these crimes films the gory act and share the same on social media. Animals are subjected to such cruel treatment since they are mute and incapable of defence.

Presently the main laws concerning prevention of animal cruelty are the‘Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960′ and Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Many videos of pups being burnt alive, being stabbed, dog being tossed from terrace three floors above ground, dogs being shot dead for pleasure, dog being thrown as a hammer throw are proof enough that the law is weak and needs more harsher punishments provisions and police to be directed to take cruelty against animals as seriously as other offences.
