Support the amazing students of Daniel Webster Middle School! Stop the charter co-location at our campus.
Despite the fact that Webster MS already hosts a charter co-location on campus (Magnolia Science Academy 4 Venice), through Proposition 39, additional space has been offered to Citizens of the World Mar Vista. As concerned parents, educators, community members and child advocates, we are unequivocally opposed to losing even more of our student’s resources to a second charter co-location.
Amazing things are happening at Webster. The school has a thriving arts program, an incredible maker space for students to explore hands on project based solutions to real world problems, an award winning MESA program, robotics and horticulture classes, a fitness center with state of the art workout equipment, a variety of diverse special education services, and a restorative justice community building program. Next school year Webster will be launching a brand new STEAM magnet center.
With this proposed second charter school co-location, Webster students stand to lose access to critical spaces on campus, including our theater room, parent center, auditorium, library, maker space, science lab and fitness center. With the addition of the STEAM magnet, Webster’s enrollment is growing for the first time in years. These learning spaces are integral components to meeting the needs of all of our current and future learners.
In their mission statement, CWC Mar Vista claims to “provide a socio-economically, culturally and racially diverse community of students in the heart of West Los Angeles with an intellectually challenging, experiential learning environment.” This is an admirable mission, and we believe that the members of the CWC community believe in it whole-heartedly. However, the school demographics tell a different story. 56% of CWC students are white, 27% are low-income, and 13% are English language learners. We were not able to locate special education data for the school. When compared to the demographics of traditional public schools like Webster, it is clear that CWC is falling drastically short of their mission.
We are concerned about the prospect of housing CWC Mar Vista on Webster’s campus and the resulting segregation of students that would occur. No child should have to wonder why their school resources are being taken away from them and given to others.
Our fantastic custodial staff is already over extended, having to maintain the grounds for Webster, Magnolia 4 and LAUSD’s Local District West offices (also housed on our campus). Adding an additional school site would put an even heavier burden on our staff, making it more difficult to handle the daily demands of maintaining a safe, clean space for Webster students.
We have concerns about having students of all grade levels, K-12, sharing a campus, which would be the case should CWC Mar Vista opt to take this space. All students deserve access to safe learning environments that are developmentally appropriate.
We have concerns about the adverse impact this will have on traffic and parking. Webster is located by one of the busiest intersections in the world (I-10 and I-405) and already houses two schools and the local district offices. Webster parents have a right to easily access parking at their child’s school, and an additional co-location will surely interfere with this right.
We believe that while the original intent of charter schools - to develop innovative approaches to educating our youth - was a noble one, in practice they have served to re-segregate our schools and do damage to traditional public schools and the students they serve.
The Webster community would like to extend an invitation to all CWC Mar Vista parents and students to visit our campus and witness the amazing opportunities that await them should they choose to become students at Daniel Webster Middle School.
