LA Kids Deserve Summertime - Start School After Labor Day and Fix LAUSD Calendar Now

LAUSD is now in the 4th year of the Early Start Calendar, bringing LA Kids back to school on Tuesday, 8/18 -- in mid-August, the hottest month of the year in Los Angeles with the worst air quality! Want to get Summertime back for our families? What if your kids could start school after Labor Day again?
Imagine if your kids could skip June Gloom and enjoy August as Southern Californians always have - rather than sweating in classrooms while families from all over the world use our beaches as their playground. Let's end this schedule that isolates our children from friends and family who go to school anywhere else in the world, not to mention summer camps, employment & educational opportunities. Other major U.S. and CA school districts start after Labor Day, why not us? It's time for change.
The School Board is now actively debating this change for 2016-17 and you can ask for that as well! (This is not about days of instruction, which remain at 180).
While we are at it:
- Tell LAUSD we never asked for 3 weeks off at Winter Break, when everyone else goes back to school after New Years and working families can't take time off, so they can take that 2nd week of January back.
- Tell LAUSD we never asked for 5 days off at Thanksgiving, that was due to budget cuts four years ago, so they can take 3 days back there too.
If you agree, please sign the petition and comment including what grades your children attend (to show all levels of LAUSD want summer back). Tweet, Email superintendent@lausd.net, zsuzsanna.vincze@lausd.net, mayor.garcetti@lacity.org, Blog, report, share with teachers, school staff, friends and family - anyone who is affected by the school calendar can sign.
