Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte represented the LAUSD Board with an unwavering commitment to serving the needs of students in Board District 1. Ms. LaMotte is no longer physically with us -- though she will always remain in our hearts, and her spirit will always travel with us as we continue the fight to advocate for a quality, public education for all citizens.
It is important that all stakeholders have a seat at the table, and nowhere is that more important than in LAUSD Board District 1. We need representation for stakeholders, the roughly 100,000 students within the district, and with each and every passing day, those voices are now not being represented. The board can and should act to appoint an interim advocate to represent the students of District 1, and that individual would serve until June 30, 2015, when the seat will once again be vacant. If the board does not appoint, we will be faced with a costly election. With as many challenges as LAUSD faces, an election is simply a possibility the students of this district can not afford. We need representation that can and does understand the needs of the community. We firmly believe no one is more qualified to take on that role at this time than Jimmie Woods Gray.
Ms. Gray is a tireless activist and grassroots organizer within the community, who understands and advocates for students and families. In 1963, Ms. Gray began her teaching career as an early childhood educator in LAUSD's Children's Centers, and in the 1970s began teaching at 24th Street Elementary, where she worked with students, parents and community members for 32 years, cultivating and developing relationships, and nurturing students to learn and grow to achieve their potential. During this time, Ms. Gray became active within United Teachers Los Angeles, and become an even stronger advocate for the needs of community members. Ms. Gray held various offices at the Local, State, and National levels. Ms. Gray is a past delegate to the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor.
In 1994, Ms. Gray was elected Chairperson of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, 47th AD Delegate to the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, elected Member of the California State Democratic Central Committee and an elected member to the California Democratic Party Executive Committee. Ms. Gray is the first person of color ever elected Chairperson of the LA County Democratic Central Committee and only the second woman ever elected. Ms. Gray has attended the Democratic National Convention in an official capacity on four different occassions. Ms. Gray attended the inaugurations of President Clinton and President Obama.
We can think of no one more iminently qualified to represent LAUSD Board District 1 at this critical time. We humbly ask the LAUSD School Board to appoint Jimmie Woods Gray to represent the community. Thank you for your consideration.
