Refund Tuition Costs for Saint Xavier University Students

The Issue

On March 16th, 2020, Saint Xavier University sent out an email saying we'll be transitioning to remote learning starting March 23rd, 2020, for the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester. This was in response to the COVID-19 pandemic currently threatening our global health. Although campus will remain open, our learning experience will be limited through online engagement.

Our last day of classroom instruction was on March 6th, 2020 before we headed to Spring Break. This means, 50% of our entire semester has been severely disrupted. Additionally, an extra week out of the semester was taken away because of COVID-19. Now, there are limitations to utilizing the health center, online classroom instructions instead of face-to-face, residence hall closures, and cancellations of all athletic events, practices, & contests. Also, there are many countless events cancelled throughout the semester. The majority of our classes were never officially offered as online instruction by the University, and now everything will have to be changed to online.

Saint Xavier University students hereby request the University to refund all students the difference between the costs of in-person instruction and online instruction. Ultimately, it's not the responsibility of Saint Xavier Students, many of which are full-time & considered low-income, to bear the cost of COVID-19's impact on academic resources.

Although the effects of COVID-19 are out of the University's full control, it is still unfair for the student body to pay full tuition/housing costs. The University has taken many correct steps so far in response to student concerns regarding the pandemic. Though, expecting students to pay full tuition when they are not receiving the full educational experience they paid for is not acceptable.
