The Issue

I’ve lived and worked in Oakland for many years, running brick-and-mortar businesses in the heart of Downtown. I've watched as vibrant establishments have dwindled, and empty storefronts have become a common sight. Yet, amidst this decline, Oakland remains a city rich in culture, brimming with talented entrepreneurs and dedicated workers. The missing element isn't innovation or passion—it's consistent economic activity.

Downtown Oakland is currently confronting a host of challenges: vacant storefronts, struggling small businesses, and varying weekday foot traffic. These issues are not due to a lack of ideas or effort, but rather a lack of coordinated action. The potential for revitalization is real, but talking isn't enough; action is required.

I urge the City of Oakland to initiate a 12-month Downtown Economic Vitality Pilot. This initiative would provide a structured, Tuesday-Thursday rhythm for downtown employers, public agencies, businesses, nonprofits, and events. It aims to bolster economic activity by energizing our downtown area, providing support to local entrepreneurs in activating vacant spaces and fostering collaboration and innovation.

The statistics paint a clear picture: small businesses represent 99.9% of all U.S. companies, creating two-thirds of new jobs annually. Oakland cannot afford to let its small businesses flounder. The City must empower its entrepreneurs—by revitalizing Downtown, we can unlock our community's economic potential.

The Economic Vitality Pilot isn’t just a plan; it’s a necessity. By coordinating efforts across the city, we can transform fear of failure into optimism about thriving. Successful execution of this pilot will ensure that Downtown Oakland not only survives but flourishes—creating a bustling ecosystem that supports its residents and draws visitors in.

Join me in calling upon the City of Oakland to support this vital step towards economic stability. As residents, business owners, or simply lovers of this city, our support can make the difference Oakland needs. Let’s take charge of our community’s future.

Please sign this petition and help ensure that Oakland is not just a place to pass through, but a destination that echoes its extraordinary culture, talent, and spirit.
