Latin Grade Boundaries (help!)

The Issue

It is time to acknowledge the disparity in how achievement is measured across different subjects and take meaningful steps to level the playing field. Latin literature, a subject rich in nuance and complexity, demands not only mastery of the language but also a deep understanding of historical, cultural, and literary contexts. The expectations to achieve a grade nine are exceedingly high, placing an almost unattainable bar for students striving to excel. This creates a sense of discouragement and inequity, as many students who are passionate about Latin literature feel their efforts are not adequately rewarded. Lowering the grade boundaries for Latin literature would reflect the intellectual rigor and dedication required, providing students with a fairer opportunity to demonstrate their excellence.

On the other hand, the current boundaries for Latin language seem disproportionately lenient. Language acquisition, while challenging, offers more structured and predictable pathways to success through grammar rules and vocabulary memorization. This makes achieving high marks significantly easier when compared to the interpretive and analytical demands of literature. By increasing the grade boundaries for Latin language, we can ensure a more balanced evaluation of students' skills across both disciplines, preserving the integrity of high achievement while celebrating the distinctive challenges that each subject offers.

It is only fair to recalibrate these boundaries so that all students feel their dedication is valued and recognized equally. Let us honor the effort and intellect students pour into Latin by making these changes.
