Please sign our petition to request that Escambia County rent the surgical suite at the Animal Shelter to the Pensacola Humane Society for a low-cost spay/neuter clinic. The Escambia County Low-cost Spay/Neuter Clinic has made a huge difference in the number of animals that are put down at the county animal shelter each year. The euthanasia rate has dropped 50% in only 4 years. This clinic is vital to the County's goal of becoming No Kill. For a number of reasons, the County has not been able to keep a veterinarian to operate the clinic. The last veterinarian hired was a drug felon that had 10 animals die during/after routine spay/neuter surgery in only three months. This hire, among other things, has terribly damaged the County’s reputation within the community and the public at large. The County is having a hard time filling the veterinarian position and has closed the spay/neuter clinic.
The Pensacola Humane Society (PHS) has been awarded a $104k grant from IMPACT 100, in addtion to a large bequest to be able to fund a spay/neuter clinic. We would like to see the County rent the spay/neuter clinic facility to the Pensacola Humane Society. PHS has a much better reputation in the community and is in a position to resolve the issues with the spay/neuter clinic that the County has been unable to fix. The County Commissioners we've spoken with think this is a good solution and would like to partner with PHS. The Shelter Manager likes this idea so he can focus more on the animals coming into the shelter. The Pensacola Humane Society has proposed this to the Interim County Administrator, Larry Newsom, and Director of Community Affairs, Marilyn Wesley. For unknown reasons they are unwilling to move forward and are holding everything up.
Spay/Neuter saves the county money by reducing the number animals killed each year and saves animal lives. It is imperative that this spay/neuter clinic reopen and stay open. The PHS clinic will be open to all no matter county of residency or income. Feral cats will be allowed. Please sign our petition to request that Escambia County rent the surgical suite at the Animal Shelter to the Pensacola Humane Society for a low-cost spay/neuter clinic as soon as possible.
