Larkin Street Youth Services: Remain neutral in your workers' union organizing drive
Please sign this petition to send a message to Larkin Street management:
Please remain neutral and allow employees a fair process to decide on unionization, free from intimidation and retaliation; please accept card check and voluntarily recognize the union when approached with majority support; and, as a contractor with the City and County of San Francisco, please refrain from using any agency funds to interfere with workers’ decision to have a union.
Larkin Street Youth Services employees provide critical services to homeless youth in San Francisco, helping them secure housing, earn their GED and find work, as well as providing them with counseling and case management. They do this work out of compassion and a sincere belief in social justice. However, workers cite low pay, inadequate benefits and work overload at Larkin Street Youth Services as creating an internal churn that translates to extremely high staff turnover. Simply put, as much as these workers want to help homeless youth in San Francisco get off the streets and turn their lives around, they feel they cannot afford to do it with what their agency pays them, and they are frustrated by a system they feel does not allow them to advocate for their clients' best interest.
Larkin Street Youth Services employees are now joining together to form a union with SEIU Local 1021, which represents workers at 20 nonprofit agencies in San Francisco and over 60 nonprofit agencies across Northern California.
A previous effort to unionize Larkin in 2010 failed after management and board members engaged in a concerted anti-union campaign that included mandatory all-staff captive meetings, anti-union all-staff emails, and intimidating one-on-one meetings with managers. Workers involved in the current organizing effort worry the same tactics are about to begin all over again, and are preemptively asking community members and elected officials to sign this petition requesting their employer remain neutral and allow them to make their own decision regarding unionization.
