Living in Massachusetts comes with its own set of challenges, especially during the harsh winter months. I found myself facing an unacceptable situation when my landlord left me without heat during one of the coldest times of the year. Despite reaching out for help, my pleas fell on deaf ears from both my landlord and, shockingly, the local court system which failed to take action.

Many tenants across Massachusetts are experiencing similar situations where landlords neglect their basic duties, leaving us to fend for ourselves against harsh weather conditions and inadequate living standards. This not only threatens our health and safety but also strips away our dignity and quality of life.

Under Massachusetts law, landlords are required to maintain habitable living conditions, yet these laws are often poorly enforced. According to the Massachusetts State Sanitary Code, it is mandatory for landlords to provide adequate heating facilities during the winter months from September 15 to June 15. Violations can result in fines; however, many landlords flout these regulations, knowing that tenants often lack the resources or support to fight back effectively.

It's time for change. We demand stricter enforcement of existing housing laws to hold landlords accountable and protect tenants from unjust living conditions. This should include increased funding and resources for tenant advocacy groups, streamlined processes in housing courts to prioritize urgent cases, and a public awareness campaign to inform tenants of their rights.
