Justice for Noah: Property Protection for Pets
The Issue
This petition is to raise awareness for a need to create and enforce policies that will protect pets from unlawful interaction with landlords, apartment managers, maintenance, etc. Pets that are forced to interact with strangers that enter their habitat are vulnerable to a variety of situations including abuse and fear.
Many states require a minimum of twenty-four-hour notice before they enter a place of residence, or are allowed to enter in case of an emergency. However, this policy is not always recognized nor respected. However, when a pet is legally on a lease as the property of a tenant, the pet should be due the same respect for his safety. If policies are not created or enforced, then pets will not have a right to a safe habitat.
I know this to be the case first hand as recently, my family has suffered the horrible loss of our pet companion - Noah. On Friday, March 6, 2020, a maintenance worker at my apartment residence was allowed to enter into our home without permission or notification from my husband or I. During this interaction, Noah was reported to run out of the apartment - leading the maintenance man and several staff members into a chase after him. It was reported to my husband and I that Noah ran into the freeway, was hit, and died.
We received the call after Noah died, not immediately when he escaped or during the staff's chase after him. My husband, our four young children, myself, and our extended family are grieving terribly behind this event as our home was Noah's. My children no longer feel safe, and the place where we reside now feels like a living nightmare as we are reminded of his untimely death every single time we enter. Anyone who has lost a pet I'm sure understands the emptiness that can be felt when losing one. It is my desire that situations like ours are not repeated. Noah was an innocent, loving, and caring dog that did not deserve to be in this situation. We are mourning due to clear negligence of our apartment manager, and we feel this is a situation no family should have to endure.
