Rent Strike Vancouver April 1st

Rent Strike Vancouver April 1st

The Issue

We the undersigned are Vancouver residents who pledge to withhold rent April 1st.

What look like the final offerings of both federal and provincial governments will leave many of our city's most vulnerable and marginalized people in the position of having to negotiate personally with their landlords, and unsure as to what emergency funding they may or may not qualify for sometime in "early April". Solidarity among renters may be the only thing standing between individuals and underhanded tactics by landlords who may wish to exploit one of many possible loopholes left open by the province's ambiguous plan to protect renters.

The provincial government has announced they will be suspending evictions for the duration of the COVID-19 crisis, but it remains unclear what will happen in the long term for those unable to make payments during that time. We don't have to tell you that Vancouver was already in a housing crisis before being affected by a global pandemic. It is unreasonable to expect tenants who were already struggling to make rent to go into debt to their landlords during this crisis.

*No-one is excluded from making this pledge by applying for the $500 rebate offered by provincial government, which will be paid directly to their landlord.

*This purpose of this petition is for those withholding rent to get a feel for how many others are doing so as well so please only sign this if you do in fact plan on withholding rent within Vancouver April 1st.
