Make LCSD schools COVID safer - bring back masks and virtual learning options!
The Issue
LCSD opened knowing cases were spiking, did not offer a district-sponsored virtual option (despite cases going up drastically from the time they polled parents), and they removed safeguards from last year.
We know the state banned masks. However, other districts are challenging this. LCSD should have postponed the school start to see if a) it is possible to challenge and b) see if cases would drop any. This would have provided extra time to put in more safety measures.
The plastic shields dividing desks are gone. No one is checking the kids for fever's at the door before coming in. There is no attempt at most schools for there to be any distancing, either.
On top of this, LCSD is allowing sports games to continue while knowing that at least 1000 students/staff are either quarantined or have tested positive. There are no masks at the events, either.
LCSD needs to close down, reevaluate, and find a way to make our children's learning environment safer.
They can and should reinstate a district-sponsored virtual learning option. Many people want this right now, and this is the least they could do. If nothing, this would bring down the numbers somewhat in classes and help our teachers distance the kids better.
Adding:
We need more communication from the district and all schools. Parents are not being informed on quarantines.
If one child in a class such as an elementary class has to be quarantine, then all parents should be informed so they can make a choice whether to keep their children at home. This should not be limited just for close contacts.
While doing work only on Google Classroom is not idea, this form of asynchronous learning would not violate the state law and would give parents a legal option to hold out their kids for safety.
