Lambeth Council must call for a permanent Ceasefire in Gaza NOW
The Issue
Lambeth Council has refused to host this petition, contending that it would violate the council's constitution. While we acknowledge Lambeth Council's past support for Ukraine during the Russian invasion, we find it disconcerting that the same level of advocacy has not been extended to the dire situation in Gaza. This apparent double standard raises questions about the council's commitment to addressing human rights abuses consistently across different geopolitical contexts. In light of this, we are hosting this petition with its original text (with updated death tolls) independently to address the pressing issues in Gaza. Please make it clear if you live or work in Lambeth when signing the petition.
We the undersigned petition the Council to back a permanent ceasefire NOW, including for Lambeth Council to write to the UK Government and Labour Party Leadership calling for a ceasefire NOW, and for Lambeth Council to call an Emergency Full Council meeting on the situation.
The current situation demands immediate attention, as the toll on human lives and the humanitarian catastrophe escalate with each passing day. At the time of writing, over 14,500 people, including over 6,000 children, have been killed by Israel’s genocide in Gaza. In addition, Israel has cut off water, food, medicine and fuel to Gaza. Israeli airstrikes continue to target civilian infrastructure – including roads, hospitals, homes, and schools. According to the UN, almost 1.5 million Palestinians have been displaced. This killing and collective punishment of civilians not only violates international law, but also defy the principles of humanity and compassion that Lambeth holds dear. As residents of Lambeth, we must stand united in denouncing such atrocities, regardless of the perpetrators.
An immediate ceasefire is the only way to stop further deterioration of the humanitarian situation. A temporary ‘pause’ would not stop the killing. According to opinion polls, a ceasefire is supported by 76% of the public, as well as the United Nations Secretary-General, the First Minister of Scotland, and the mayors of London and Greater Manchester. As charities including Christian Aid, Oxfam and Save the Children have said: a ceasefire ‘remains our only option to avert further loss of civilian life and humanitarian catastrophe.’
As Lambeth is one of the most diverse Boroughs in the country with commitments to equality, fairness, and social justice, the council must align itself with these values by advocating for a ceasefire on behalf of its residents.
We implore the council to act swiftly in calling for an immediate ceasefire and use its influence to bring attention to this urgent matter. Let us, as a community, send a resounding message that Lambeth stands for peace, justice, and the protection of human rights.
