Protect Streatham Green started this petition to Lambeth Borough Council

Of all the places in London crying out for CCTV Streatham Green must rank among the first.

But Lambeth Council refuses or is unable to install it.

This small vulnerable open space in the heart of the suburb, close to the busy St Leonard’s Junction, has been plagued for years with street drinking, drug dealing and taking, urination and other forms of anti-social behaviour.

Recently the situation has deteriorated badly, with the green a magnet for offenders, making the place even more unpleasant and unsafe to visitors and causing disturbance to local residents.

Drinking, urination, and even worse, has spread to the nearby St Leonard’s churchyard which should be a haven of tranquillity in the busy town centre.

CCTV cannot solve the problem but without it there is little hope.  It can record offences taking place, help to identify offenders and at the very least serve as some deterrent if advertised.

The police and council do not have the resources for continuous patrolling.  And as soon as uniformed officers or officials appear the culprits disappear, and there is no evidence – except the mess and smells.

Lambeth Council has hundreds of CCTV cameras all over the borough, but only a handful in Streatham.  It is planning to install scores more at entry points into various Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, with loads of money to be earnt from penalising drivers.

But it cannot manage a single camera for the Green or the churchyard.  A temporary mobile camera was promised but even that has been diverted elsewhere, we are told.

Enough is enough.  CCTV is vital now and without further delay and procrastination.
