Lambert's Bay Landfill burning due to terrible management, no immediate action!

The Issue

The Lamberts Bay unlicensed and illegal dumping site, on the banks of the Jackals river, has burnt ten times since the 03.12.2021. The last fire started on the 02.05.2022 and was still burning on the 13.06.2022. The residents and the municipal dump site workers of Lamberts Bay have been breathing the toxic fumes for over a month. Sometimes we can't go out of doors or even open our windows without feeling ill, suffocating from the fumes flooding our small town.  The stables housing 15 horses are 200 meters from the dump and the horses and other animals in the vicinity are getting sick.

Many complaints have been submitted to The Cederberg Municipality, to no effect. In July 2021, in response to a complaint, the Western Cape Government Environmental Affairs and Development Planning inspected the site and found it was not being correctly managed. In its report, five recommendations were made to the Cederberg Municipality. To date, none of these have been fulfilled. Many residents have requested the Cederberg municipality extinguish the current fire. To date still not been extinguished.

We are asking for the following:

• The current fire is to be extinguished asap.

• The employees at the waste site to be adequately trained within the next three months.

• Recycling implemented as per the Cederberg Municipality's Integrated Waste Management Plan within three months.

• The dumpsite to be moved away from the coastal wetland and the current site to be rehabilitated.

Please sign and share this petition and support the residents, animals, and environment of Lamberts Bay and the west coast.
