Shiba Maggon (born March 16, 1976), is a former Indian professional player of The Basketball Federation of India from Delhi, represented India from 1997 to 2009. She started her basketball career from high school, and played for different states and professional teams from the year 1989 to 2010. With 7 GOLD and 8 Silver Medals to her credit at the Senior Nationals, which is known to be the highest level of competition in India, Shiba has earned various others awards and medals at different National and International events. Belonging from a family having a sports background, has helped Shiba to achieve her Goals. Her Father was a cricketer who played for his district Karnal and college. Her Sister Shelly Maggon was member of Indian Korfball team, captain of Netball Indian women team and a member of the national camp for basketball. Her younger brother too is a former Indian national player, completing the sporting family. Having picked up by SAI for her talent as an athlete, Shiba left Haryana and moved to Chandigarh in the year 1991 to enjoy a successful high school and youth basketball career. Under her leadership Chandigarh came in the lime light, with a GOLD at youth and junior nationals and she was recognized as the most promising upcoming player of the country. With gold medals at All India University, her hunger for success and passion to do something for country grew more. During her career she has been given many awards for being the best player at various national and All India Championships. She has twice won the runner-up best shooter award at International events and was ranked among the top five players of Asia in 2001 in Thailand. In 1996, Shiba joined the only professional team in India, Indian Railways, and her career took a new leap. Playing with Indian railways helped her to understand responsibility of a player towards the team and nation. Being a member of the national team camp since 1992, she donned the colors of Indian team in 1997.With 6 Gold medals to her credit she shifted from Railways to MTNL Delhi, another professional team which was formed in 2002. With one gold and eight silvers for Delhi, Shiba finally retired from professional basketball in 2010. After hanging her shoes as a player Shiba picked up on coaching and in a short span of time gained popularity as the most talented and successful young coach of India. Her experience and knowledge has helped the Indian under-16 and under-18 women team to qualify for level one at the FIBA Asia Championship. Shiba has been also associated with NBA India to develop the game since 2010. She holds workshops and camps from time to time in different parts of the country to train and motivate players. Shiba has a unique achievement of being the only woman in the history of Indian basketball to represent a country as a player, coach and referee, becoming the first woman to acquire a FIBA referee license in 2008.
