Maple Valley Highway (169) connects residents in smaller suburb towns to the more major freeways that lead to Seattle and the more metro areas of Western Washington. Families have been moving to this suburban, and in some spots even more rural area to be able to find a home they can afford or to have large yards or to enjoy the quiet and scenic environment. The Cedar River, which is a large home to local Salmon, runs parallel to 169.
Recently, Lakeside Industries, has submitted an application to King County to build an asphalt plant right on the highway and just across the street from the Cedar River.
The residents of Maple Heights, and surrounding neighborhoods, are asking for support to stop the building of this plant. This plant is expected to add 295 trucks per day to the awful traffic issue that already exists. Pollutants will fill the air and potentially contaminate the local ground or the Cedar River. Growing families live here, many children that will be exposed to the harmful impacts of this plant. Seniors who have lived here for 40 or more years that do not need the added Influence of asphalt fumes on their health. There are neighbors who have animals that live in yards just a few hundred feet away. Beautiful fruit trees that will be ruined.
We don’t need an asphalt plant here. We need a convenient grocery store, a drug store, somewhere to take our children, restaurants and other life services.
ETA (11.7.17) As stated in the 2016 King County Comprehensive Plan: R-515 Existing industrial uses in the Rural Area outside of Rural Towns, the industrial area on the King County-designated historic site along State Route 169 or the designated industrial area adjacent to the Rural Neighborhood Commercial Center of Preston shall be zoned rural residential but may continue if they qualify as legal, nonconforming uses."
This 2016 Comp Plan Policy expressly directs that this specific property "shall be zoned rural residential" and that only pre-existing legal, nonconforming uses are allowed to continue thereafter. "'Shall' and 'will' in a policy mean that it is mandatory for the county to carry out the policy, even if a timeline is not included. 'Shall' and 'will' are imperative and nondiscretionary – the county must make decisions based on what the policy says to do." 2016 Comp Plan, Attach A, Glossary at p. G-25.
