Keep Lake Stevens Great, NO to the Proposed Costco Warehouse & Gas Station!

Keep Lake Stevens Great, NO to the Proposed Costco Warehouse & Gas Station!
The Issue
We are Lake Stevens residents, neighbors and merchants who love our community. With thoughtful planning and responsible growth, our town can thrive while still maintaining that special character and charm that makes Lake Stevens such a special place to live. And that is why we are so concerned and opposed to plans for a massive 37-acre, 170,000 sq. ft. Costco warehouse and 30 pump gas station at the corner of Hwy. 9 & 20th Street SE in Lake Stevens.
The proposed Costco development will significantly and dramatically impact traffic, commute and emergency response times, air quality, public health and safety, and the six wetlands on the property.
This project alone is expected to generate at least 3,000-5,000 vehicle traffic trips PER DAY on already overburdened and heavily congested Hwy. 9 and local roads. In addition to the traffic busting congestion it will cause, are the very real and negative economic impacts that it will have on our smaller, existing businesses that actually support our community and who don’t ask for the millions of dollars in tax breaks and incentives from the City that Costco is seeking just for the “privilege” of locating in Lake Stevens.
We are also deeply troubled by the lack of any comprehensive environmental studies and analysis on the negative impacts this project would have on the six wetlands that are on the property, including several Critical Area wetlands and the headwaters of Mosher Creek which host native cutthroat trout, Coho salmon, and lamprey. Costco and the City need to do the right thing and conduct a full Environmental Impact Statement and consider alternative projects or uses for the site that will not destroy the critical wetlands and habitats on this property.
We don’t want to become another traffic congested, strip mall suburb of Seattle! Please SIGN this petition and speak out in support of a better plan that matches the scope and scale of our special lakeside community, a plan that won’t so negatively impact our traffic, wetlands, small businesses, and natural resources.
