Lake Placid, NY: Ensuring Public Safety, Workforce Continuity, & International Inclusivity

The Issue

The Village of Lake Placid, renowned worldwide for its picturesque landscapes and as a hub for sports and tourism, faces a significant crossroads. The presence and activities of Federal Immigration Enforcement cast a shadow over our community's priorities of safety, international inclusivity, workforce continuity, and economic vitality. Our proposal is a resolution to limit the cooperation of local authorities with federal immigration enforcement.

Lake Placid's strength has always been in its diverse and cohesive community, along with its vibrant workforce that supports tourism and local businesses. The ongoing activities by federal agencies not only threaten these values but also disrupt the continuity that our local economy relies on. Many residents and workers, who are integral parts of our community, live in constant fear of raids or unwarranted detentions, affecting their ability to contribute meaningfully to society.

Moreover, our tourism industry, the lifeblood of the town’s economy, risks being adversely impacted. Visitors come here seeking solace and recreation, not witnessing tales of division and distress. Ensuring public safety by clearly defining the level of interaction with federal immigration enforcement makes Lake Placid an even more attractive destination. Limiting cooperation with federal enforcement agencies can re-ensure our stance as a welcoming and safe space for community members and international visitors.

We ask the Village Board of Lake Placid to adopt this resolution, thereby reaffirming our commitment to protect all our residents, support our economic initiatives, and maintain the harmony that makes this village a cherished home to many.

Join us in this crucial endeavor to preserve the social fabric and enhance the quality of life in Lake Placid. Please sign this petition to show your support for a resolution that aligns with our community's values and future aspirations.

This effort is being led by North Country Immigrant Allies (NCIA) and the Lake Placid business community.
