Reducing waste is a fantastic initiative that should be encouraged by all. There are several ways we can all contribute to reducing our waste and minimise our impact on the environment, such as the new, however controversial green waste collection scheme, the Return and Earn program helping to reduce recyclable content in landfill, education programs to teach the general public how they can help minimise waste and recycle where possible.
However, reducing putrescible waste collection frequency by 50% has little to no effect on this.
It does however pose certain risks to residents health and safety.
Many households with small children are forced to place child's nappies and sanitary products in the provided bins, only to have them decompose, attracting Vermon, Insects and other animals associated with this food chain. This poses a risk of disease and potential injury to residents and their children as listed by the department of health.

Health risks caused by inadequate waste/pest control:

salmonellosis
shigellosis
staphyloccal food poisoning
skin infections
tetanus
trachoma
hepatitis A
gastroenteritis
Murray Valley encephalitis
Ross River virus disease
hookworm
threadworm
roundworm

Fortnightly collection can cause the waste in the bin to become compacted, and adding more waste on top makes the bin very heavy. This creates a health and safety risk, and many elderly residents now require assistance in placing their bins out, negating the savings in labour proposed by the change.
It's time to let LMCC know that there are far better ways to encourage responsible waste management.
